Artist's Comments

Sokka is clearly not happy with the actor they chose to play him. XD

Okay I know it's wrong to compare someone's skin like this but I mean come on... It was called for. I was going to do Nicola Peltz to Katara as well but I actually think she looks like Katara or at least has Katara's "essence" so I don't mind her.

But yeah.. I'm sure some people were curious as to the skin difference. I didn't edit any of the images and I didn't choose the darkest picture of Sokka I could find or the lightest picture of Whats-his-face. So I was fair. I chose the most general and average-lit shots of the both of them.

EDIT: After reading a few comments saying that the casting is perfectly fine and that I'm making too much of a big deal... NO. Just. NO. This is BLATANT WHITE WASHING. People like to pretend that the fire of racism has been completely extinguished for a long time now but they need to BREAK out of that SELFISH FANTASY. So many bloody careers lost to what could have been great different ethnic actors/actresses, who may now NEVER EVER be discovered.

Shyamalan, Avatar was never yours to throw in your own artistic license. Your only job is to transform the cartoon series into three live-action movies. The show was already great, you just needed to translate it into good film language. This DOES NOT mean you can change the characters' races to your liking. You DO NOT get artistic license to change things like that from the original story. It's not your story to change. Period.

:star: And WHOEVER CAST DEV PATEL FOR ZUKO INSTEAD OF FOR SOKKA NEEDS TO THROW THEMSELVES IN FRONT OF A TRAIN. MY GOD MY FAITH IN HOLLYWOOD IS LOST BECAUSE OF THAT.

You know, they'll probably use makeup or something. I agree with the whole argument that there aren't actually any white kids in Avatar, but they have ways of making them appear differently on screen.

Just sayin'.

ahhaha. but they cant have all the characters be asian. cept aang...and toph i gues...well actually...there are a few white characters. oh well. i love jackson. at firsts i was skeptical cause sokka is fairly dark. but then i just saw the puppetmaster, and the scene where sokkas in bed and his hairs out. and my first thought was. OMG I TOTALLY SEE IT NOW! JACKSON RATHBONE!

lmao. but do you know if it actually will be him? like for sure

Of course they're going to use makeup...XD They can put Johnny Depp in a fat suit and call it Iroh if they wanted to. As much as I respect Johnny Depp and the actors they chose to play the cast of The Last Airbender, it just isn't right. :/

It's pretty much confirmed, yeah. :( But the only person I can see being white is Aang. I see Toph as a chubby short spunky Asian girl, Sokka and Katara as some sort of Indian/Hawaiian/Middle Eastern/Alaskan type of ethnicity, and a lot of the rest Asian.

Because they're not the right race, you mean?

Yupyup. Like they weren't even trying to find someone with a similar race and just ended up getting two random actors who have some faint facial similarities. What happened to the broad new child stars search that they did? All they pulled in from that was Aang.

awww. you dont like him? lol. oh well.
yeah, aang white. i can sorta imagine toph either way. but if asian, a light asian. sokka and katara as what you said and filipino i guess. fire nation people i can imagian either way as well. i mean theyd all look more like the part if they were asian, but again i say, they cant all be asian. and it wouldnt make THAT much of a difference

Rathbone is too white! Heck, he's got "bone" right in his name; one of the whitest things in existence (once all the meat's been peeled away :zombie:). And using make-up to make an actor's skin that much darker is bordering on black-face, and that'd be racist!

I don't exactly hate their choice for character pick, but I will admitt that at first I was like "wtf are they thinking?" but now I'm kind of interested to see how it will turn out. I will admit I did see Sokka and Katara as much darker, but aside from the looks Jackson really is a good actor and he can be really funny for any of you who have seen Senior skip day. I thought he was hilarious. As for the others well, I don't know who Noah Ranger is and I can't even remember the Katara girls name but I'm waiting to see how they will turn out as well. Jesse McCartney as Zuko does kind of worry me though. However I will wait to see before I judge.
